Randy Olson, a data analyst, has painstakingly assembled data on marriage and divorce in the US dating back to 1867. The data he gathered and analyzed is from the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics.

Olson created a graph that shows the number of marriages and divorces each year per every 1000 people. The graph reveals a steady decline in marriage rates since the 1980s. Surprisingly, marriage rates are at the lowest point since 1870. During the Great Depression in the 1930s there was also a dip in marriage rates. This is attributed to fewer jobs and less stability for starting a family. This trend has been reflected in the latest Great Recession. Divorce rates are also down today compared with the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s.

Just as the graph shows the dips, it also shows the highs. Both World War I and World War II had a significant impact on marriage and divorce rates, with couples rushing to the altar before the wars started and at their conclusions. Surprisingly, Olson noted that divorces spiked after the conclusion of WWII. This is perhaps because couples who had married quickly before the war realized they had made a mistake.
