Study Shows Men at Risk for Serious Weight Gain Post-Divorce

Over time, academics and other professionals have been studying marriage and divorce from just about every angle imaginable.  Many of these studies have centered on the effects that both marriage and divorce have on men and women, and many of these studies have found differences between the genders when faced with either or both of these processes.  The latest example comes in the form of a study that looks at weight gain for men and women both after marriage and after a divorce.

According to a study performed at the Ohio State University, women are at risk for weight gain after a marriage has taken place and men are at risk for a larger weight gain after a divorce.  These conclusions were formed by looking at more than 10,000 people following a marriage or a divorce for a period of 22 years.  While the study pointed out that many of the people who gained weight only added a minor amount, others added substantial weight for different reasons.

One of the theories that emerged regarding how and why men tended to add weight after a divorce is because of the radical change in lifestyle that they encounter.  Men after a divorce no longer sit down for a healthy family meal, and instead will eat out or not eat as well in terms of nutrition.  In addition, many men suffer from high amounts of stress and differing intensities of depression after a marriage has ended.
