Thanksgiving is a time during which everyone reflects on the things that they have to be thankful for. However, it can be a difficult time for those going through a divorce. When facing a divorce situation alone, especially when it is the first holiday since the separation, it may be very hard to keep the spirit of the holidays in mind. The Men’s Legal Center understands that the holidays can be very difficult for those who are separated and has some advice for those facing them alone.
- First, get some perspective. It is very difficult to make changes in your life, and the longer you have been married the more difficult these first holidays may be. It is especially hard if your children are visiting your former spouse and you are left alone during the holidays. However, as the years pass and you and the children become adjusted to the new reality of visiting two households, you can have much happier holidays in the future. Do not lose sight of the fact that this pain, although very real, is a temporary issue that will become better with time.
- Surround yourself with support. Supportive family members and friends are a must during the holidays. Be sure you visit your own family or secure an invitation to spend the day with friends. You will be much less likely to mope or to feel bad about your new situation.
- Volunteer to help others. A great idea if you are alone for the holidays is to volunteer at a soup kitchen, shelter or other place where there are people in need. There is something about working selflessly with others who need you that changes your outlook. Many people find that they are much less sad after volunteering and focusing on others than if they focus inwardly on their own problems.
- Enjoy the time you do have with your kids. The last thing you want to do is spend what time you do have with your children being negative. Plan great activities and make an effort to enjoy yourself, for your kids’ sake and your own.
