Cohabitation Rate in the United States Surpasses Divorce Rate

For decades, professionals and academics tracked marriages and divorces in order to learn many lessons.  Specifically, much has been learned about divorce in the United States since it’s been studied from innumerable angles by people all over the country.  Over those decades, several different patterns regarding the divorce rate in the country have been detected, and it seems that the overall divorce rate has been falling in recent years.  In fact, there are other social phenomena that have been gaining on divorce in terms of overall rate in recent years, and one of them is cohabitation.

In fact, according to a study that was recently completed by researchers at the University of Virginia and other institutions, 24 percent of born to married parents will see those parents divorce or separate by the time they are 12 years old.  In addition, 42 percent of children will experience at least one parent cohabitation by the time they reach the same age.  One parent cohabitation means that at least one parent will live with someone else they are not married to for an appreciable amount of time.

Clearly, the results of this study will send shock waves through the academic community, as it was always assumed that the divorce rate would be higher than the cohabitation rate.  However, that is no longer the case, and some are concerned about the potential psychological harm that could be done to children in this situation.
