Census Data Indicates More Fathers May Be Winning Child Custody Battles

The United States Census is completed every 10 years, and every time it’s done it leads to the release of data that is extremely interesting for many reasons.  One of the pieces of data that was released after the 2010 Census involves the number of single fathers serving as the heads of households.  The data shows that there are more single fathers listed as heads of households than ever before in the country’s history.

Specifically, the data revealed that the number of American families with single, male heads of households increased by 27.3 percent between the years of 2000 and 2010. At this point, approximately 8 percent of all American households fall under this designation.  The percentage in 2000 stood at 6.3 percent, and for a historical perspective, the number of American households with this designation in 1950 stood at 1.1 percent.  This is a trend that appears to be moving upwards at a fast rate.

While there could be many reasons for this spike in the number of American households being led by single fathers, one cause that’s almost certainly relevant to this statistical rise involves the number of fathers who are winning primary custody of their children in divorce cases.  Laws around the United States have become somewhat more balanced and do not simply assume that the mother will obtain primary custody of the children in a divorce case.
