California Divorce Rate Comes In Below National Average

For many years, California has been known as a jurisdiction where quickie divorces were the norm and where the institution was taken lightly.  That reputation may have something to do with the fact that California has had a no-fault divorce system in place for more than 40 years.  However, many people were surprised to see the statistics regarding divorce rates for every state that were released by the United States Census Bureau in furtherance of their work in 2010.

According to the Census Bureau, the California divorce rate for both men and women fell well below the national averages for both genders.  Specifically, California men had a divorce rate of 8 for every 1,000 in 2009, falling below the national rate of 9.2 per 1,000 men.  In addition, California women were divorced in 2009 at a rate of 8.9 per 1,000 women, also below the national rate of 9.7

These statistics should also be compared to the marriage rates for men and women in California, which in general were about the same as the national average.  19.1 men in California per every 1,000 were married in 2009, which was exactly the national average.  17.6 women per 1,000 in California were married during the same timeframe, which was just above the national rate of 17.5 per 1,000.
