Bill Ratifying International Child Support Treaty Moves Forward

child custody

For several years now, the United States has been a signatory on an international treaty that would provide for cooperation between countries around the world regarding the collection of child support payments from parents who live in other places around the globe.  However, despite signing the treaty in 2007, no bill has been passed that would ratify that signature and get the process of taking part in this cooperation started.  However, the House of Representatives has recently passed a bill that would ratify this treaty and get the United States moving in this cooperative effort.

The House passed the legislation on Tuesday and will now move on to the Senate, and if it’s passed into law the United States would begin its participation in international child support collection efforts.  To date, the United States has agreements with 15 different countries, but parents living in other countries who owe child support can delay payments for several years.  This bill would potentially speed the process of collection considerably.

Those who support the bill state that the United States should take part in this agreement because the country is helping other countries with collection efforts while those living stateside have waited for more than five years on average before seeing any payments.  Those who do not support the bill are leery of enforcing judgments from countries where their legal systems are seen as dubious.
