Study Shows 1 in 10 Children Live with Grandparents

The United States Census is performed every 10 years, and most people think that its purpose is to reveal the number of residents living in the country.  However, there are several other forms of data that are released whenever the process is completed that provide insights into different aspects of American life.  One of the statistics that resulted in a surprise for many people involved the number of children in the United States who were living with grandparents.

According to the census, the number of children in the United States living with at least one grandparent has risen sharply over the past 20 years.  In 1991, 4.7 million children were living with at least one grandparent.  By the time the calendar had moved into 2011, that number had risen to 7.8 million children.  This statistic reveals that more than 10 percent of children in the country live with at least one grandparent.

At this point, experts are beginning to formulate theories as to why this is occurring.  Among those theories include the rise in the number of single parents having children, the number of divorces that are being filed and completed and the need to coexist with older members of the family for economic reasons because of the recession that has taken hold of the country in recent years.

Of course, this trend could also give rise to the need for grandparents to enforce their legal rights when it comes to being able to spend time with their grandchildren.  Grandparents do have rights that can include the rights to visitation, child custody in some situations and even grandparent adoption if the necessity arises.  Each situation is obviously different, but grandparents should not assume that they have no legal rights within this context.

If you are facing a potential legal issue that deals with grandparents and grandchildren, you need to be made aware of those legal rights before making any decisions.  Seek the help of San Diego grandparents’ rights lawyers who have helped many clients clarify their situations.  Contact the Men’s Legal Center today to schedule an initial consultation.
