Special Court in Kentucky Designed to Help Those Delinquent in Child Support Payments

child custody

When someone is ordered by a court to pay child support because he or she does not have custody of a child or children, that order needs to be taken with the utmost in seriousness.  When people are unable to continue to make these payments in a timely manner, they can face serious legal consequences that can sometimes include time in jail.  However, some parts of the country are beginning to look at alternative solutions to the problem presented by parents not paying child support.

The latest example comes from Fayette County in Kentucky.  The county has set up a specialty court that has targeted parents who are seriously delinquent in their child support payments.  However, instead of arresting them and putting them in jail, they are providing them with training designed to help them find gainful employment and to help them manage their finances such that they can catch up with those child support payments and continue to make them in a timely manner.

This is not the first court system to attempt to move down this road in an attempt to bring down the enormous amount of back child support that’s owed by parents.  So far, the program in Kentucky is showing promise in that those who have gone through the training are seemingly doing well with their payments and enforcement costs have gone down.
