Louisiana Program to Intercept Casino Winnings to Pay Back Child Support Succeeding

Louisiana is a state with a unique economy, and one of the mainstays of that economy is the casino industry.  People from all over the world travel to the state to gamble, and that includes non-custodial parents who happen to owe back child support.  Based on that reality, the state government there has been monitoring a pilot program that allows it to intercept winnings earned by patrons who are found to owe child support to the custodial parents of their children.

According to recent reports, this program is apparently working, as more than 20 parents’ winnings have been intercepted at state casinos that have paid more than $40,000 towards delinquent child support.  These payments have been intercepted electronically when those who win enough to have to register those winnings with the state, and this program was launched only three months ago.  The progress that has been made has been seen as encouraging by those who have implemented it after the state legislature approved this program.

In general, the state collects more than $385 million in child support payments every year, but like everywhere else, a substantial amount of these payments are not made in a timely fashion.  As a result, the state is continuing to try new things in order to bring down the number of delinquent accounts that are on record.
