American Divorce Rate for Those Over 50 Skyrockets

American Divorce Rate for Those Over 50 Skyrockets

Most people understand that almost half of all marriages end in divorce.  This has been a well-known statistic for some time, but most people would likely feel that the longer two people are married, the less likely it is that they would ever contemplate much less complete a divorce.  However, that notion is not accurate, as statistics that have recently been published indicate that the divorce rate for people who are over 50 years of age is rising quickly in the United States.

Specifically, Bowling Green State University conducted a study of the divorce rates for people of certain ages, and its focus was primarily on people who were older.  The conclusions were startling to say the least.  In 1990 in the United States, there were 4.67 divorces per 1,000 people in the country.  By the time the calendar reached 2008, those over 50 were getting divorces at a rate of 9.74 per 1,000 people.  That means that the divorce rate for those over 50 has more than doubled in the past 20 years.

Experts are somewhat divided on why this has been happening, but there have been many theories put forth.  These theories include the notion that the stigma attached to divorce has dissipated to a degree, people of the Baby Boomer generation are living longer than their predecessors and see more of a life ahead if they get divorced at this age and cultural norms have shifted during this time.
