Time with your children should be cherished, and the chances are good that you’ll never regret spending time with them. Surprising to some fathers, though, is the realization that you don’t have to make extravagant plans to make sure your children have a good time.
In this issue, we’ll share a few easy-peasy ideas that could turn any humdrum day into an unforgettable one.
Fun Things to do With Your Children This Summer
With the last day of school in San Diego quickly approaching, your children will have a lot of time on their hands. In a previous issue, we shared summer vacation planning advice for divorced fathers. But with these ideas, you won’t have to travel far beyond your backdoor to make lasting memories with your child.
- Take part in a bug expedition.
Most kids love wildlife and getting their hands dirty. Take advantage of that by digging for worms, looking for lizards and hunting for frogs. There are small breathable containers widely available that are perfect for briefly holding the wildlife before releasing them. - Visit your local fire station.
Did you know that the City of San Diego’s fire stations are open each day from 9am-11am and 2pm-5pm for tours? You’ll need to call ahead of time to arrange it, but trust us – it’s worth it. Your child will meet real life heroes and will marvel at the trucks. - Get out in the rain.
Rainy days don’t have to spoil the fun. If the rain is gentle, encourage your children to put on their swimsuits and go outdoors to dance around in the rain while catching raindrops and jumping in puddles. Only do this during gentle rains, though; if the storm is heavy, stay safe and dry indoors. - Learn how the master artisans do their thing.
One of the great things about living in San Diego is the availability of art shows and exhibits. Take advantage of this and – with your children – learn how to paint, blow glass and other cool stuff. - Do yard word together.
This may not sound fun to you but children can help you out by pulling up weeds and watering plants with small watering cans.
