When people think of child custody and visitation issues, most immediately envision a situation where the parents of a child or children go to battle in court over which parent will basically exercise control over the children when it comes to common and day-to-day decisions.  However, there has also been another custody and visitation issue simmering around the country, and that involves the issue of grandparent visitation.  This controversy could ultimately come to a head if the United States Supreme Court decides to hear a case that deals with this issue.

Specifically, the Supreme Court is expected to announce within the next few weeks if it will hear a case that stems from Alabama, but the implications of its decision would likely extend across the country.  Generally, the decision would deal with the balancing of the rights of parents to decide who spends time with their children versus the rights of grandparents to spend time with and bond with their grandchildren.

There is precedent on this issue, as the Supreme Court ruled in 2000 that the decisions of competent parents would govern these situations, but the decision was nonspecific enough that it has led to an extremely wide variance in the laws of different states with regards to this issue.  Therefore, it's hoped by those who want to court to hear this case that nationwide uniform standards can at least begin to be defined.
