City Councilman in Orange County Charged with Perjury After Allegedly Trying to Avoid Child Support Payments

child-custodyWhen a couple obtains a divorce and there are children of that marriage, the court will usually order payment of child support by the non-custodial parent.  These orders are given the same weight as any other orders issued by a court, which means that the failure to adhere to their terms could constitute a crime.  Unfortunately for one Orange County city councilman, that’s exactly what authorities are alleging as he faces six felony counts.

Specifically, authorities have charged the man with six counts of perjury because he allegedly entered false information on documentation with the Department of Motor Vehicles in attempts to secure drivers’ licenses under different names.  He allegedly did so because he was hiding assets under a different name and because he was attempting to avoid paying child support.  If convicted, the man could face more than six years in state prison.

Unfortunately, situations like this one arise more often than people would think, as there are parents out there – men and women – who will go to extreme lengths in order to avoid paying the child support they are ordered to pay.  These types of actions can bring about serious criminal consequences for anyone who attempts to avoid this serious obligation.  No word was given as to whether the defendant in this case plans to fight these charges.

People who are ordered to pay child support need to make sure that they do so in accordance with the terms set out by the court that issues the order.  However, there are options available for those who can no longer meet those obligations as there are for parents who are not being paid properly by non-custodial parents.  People facing these types of issues need to take immediate steps to secure professional help.

If you are facing a problem of one type or another that relates to this type of support, you need to seek the help of San Diego child support lawyers who can help you bring about a resolution to the issue.  Contact the Men’s Legal Center today to schedule an initial consultation.
